Armed bandits have launched a fresh attack on Yashikira community in Kwara State, abducting several residents and setting parts of the Emir’s palace ablaze during a violent overnight invasion.
Residents said the attackers stormed the community in Baruten Local Government Area under the cover of darkness, firing gunshots repeatedly and forcing many villagers to flee into nearby bushes for safety.
During the attack, the gunmen reportedly targeted the palace of the Emir of Yashikira, damaging sections of the building and burning vehicles within the premises.
Local sources said at least 10 people were kidnapped during the invasion, including women and children linked to the royal household and other residents of the community.
The attack also reportedly extended to the local police divisional headquarters where security operatives engaged the assailants in a gun battle before the attackers escaped.
Residents described the incident as terrifying, saying the community was thrown into panic as gunshots echoed across the area for several hours.
Security agencies later arrived in the community and began search operations across nearby forests and surrounding routes in an effort to rescue the abducted victims.
Police authorities confirmed the attack and said tactical teams, local vigilantes, and other security personnel had been deployed to strengthen security in the area.
The latest incident has renewed fears among residents of Kwara North where cases of kidnappings and armed attacks have continued to increase in recent months.
Community leaders have repeatedly appealed to the government for stronger security presence, warning that rural communities are becoming increasingly vulnerable to criminal groups operating around border areas.
Authorities assured residents that operations are ongoing to track down the attackers and restore calm to the affected community.
