Peter Obi’s Convoy Blocked In Benue As Sowore Condemns Incident

The convoy of the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential candidate, Peter Obi, was reportedly blocked by youths in Benue State on Tuesday as he attempted to enter Makurdi, the state capital.

The incident occurred around Gboko Road, near the Nigerian Air Force Base and Makurdi Airport, where protesters reportedly barricaded the road and prevented Obi’s convoy from proceeding.

Obi said he was on his way to Benue to visit and sympathise with victims of recent killings in the state when his movement was stopped.

According to the former Anambra State governor, he was informed that some youths, allegedly led by a Special Assistant to the state government, had decided to block the road.

The development attracted condemnation from African Action Congress presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, who described the incident as political brigandage.

Sowore alleged that the blockade appeared to be sponsored and warned that no presidential candidate should be prevented from carrying out legitimate political activities through violence, intimidation or thuggery.

He said such actions threatened the democratic rights of Nigerians and called on those responsible to immediately stop the alleged attacks.

Meanwhile, the Benue State Government denied knowledge of Obi’s visit, saying it was not aware that the presidential candidate was coming into the state.

The Benue State Police Command also confirmed that it was aware of Obi’s movement to Yelwata and that police officers provided security for his convoy.

The police said the reason some youths blocked the convoy was still unknown, adding that the command was monitoring the situation and investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
