FG Approves New Welfare Package, Increases Civil Servants’ Allowances

Civil servants across Nigeria are set for improved earnings and stronger welfare support following a fresh package approved by the Federal Government.
The reforms, unveiled in Abuja by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, introduce higher allowances and new incentives aimed at easing financial pressure on workers.
The changes affect employees under key salary structures, including CONPSS and CONRAISS, ensuring that both administrative staff and research personnel benefit from the adjustments.
Under the new package, several allowances have been increased, with updates covering duty tour allowance, estacode and book allowance, among others listed in the Public Service Rules.
A notable addition is the approval of full Duty Tour Allowance for workers attending official training, even when such programmes take place within their duty location.
The government also introduced a new retirement benefit that guarantees civil servants a payout equivalent to their total annual earnings upon exit, in addition to their pension.
Officials say the initiative is designed to provide better financial security for retirees and address long-standing concerns about post-service welfare.
In a related move, authorities confirmed the rollout of the Employee Compensation Scheme to support workers who suffer injuries or fatalities in the course of their duties.
The reforms follow sustained pressure from labour groups demanding improved conditions of service amid rising economic challenges.
Observers believe the measures could help stabilise the workforce, improve morale and encourage greater efficiency across government institutions as implementation begins.
