Tension Rises As Boko Haram Issues Ultimatum

By Wellington Jopelo
Tension is rising in Borno State after Boko Haram released a new video warning of drastic action over hundreds of abducted victims.
The group said it is holding 416 people, mostly women and children, and has issued a 72-hour deadline.
In the video, the insurgents warned that failure to meet their demands could lead to the victims being moved to unknown locations.
They claimed that once relocated, the captives may never be seen again.
The message also challenged the Nigerian government to attempt a military rescue if it chooses.
According to the group, it is fully prepared for any confrontation with security forces.
The video showed armed fighters dressed in military-style clothing delivering the warning.
Although the group did not clearly restate its demands in the latest footage, sources involved in negotiations said a ransom had earlier been requested.

The amount reportedly demanded for the release of the victims is in the billions of naira.
The victims are believed to have been abducted during a previous attack in the Ngoshe area.
Local sources say efforts are ongoing to secure their release through mediation.
The Borno South Youths Alliance has been involved in communication efforts between the group and affected communities.
Its leadership confirmed receiving the message and described it as a final warning.
The group has called on the Federal Government and other stakeholders to act quickly to prevent further harm to the captives.
Appeals have also been made to prominent Nigerians and philanthropists to support efforts aimed at securing their release.
The situation has raised fresh concerns about security in the North-East and the safety of civilians in affected communities.
