Police Reform Drive Deepens as IGP Vows Zero Tolerance After Effurun Shooting

A fresh push to restore discipline within the Nigeria Police Force has been triggered following the controversial shooting in Effurun, with authorities promising decisive action against misconduct.
The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu , said the incident marks a turning point in how the force handles abuse of power, stressing that officers will now be held fully accountable for their actions.
He warned that the use of firearms outside established rules will no longer be tolerated, adding that any officer found culpable will face immediate sanctions, including dismissal and prosecution.
The police chief noted that the era of quietly shielding erring personnel is over, insisting that discipline and professionalism must become the foundation of modern policing in Nigeria.
His remarks come amid widespread public anger over the Effurun incident, which has once again raised concerns about excessive force and lack of accountability within the system.
IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disualso highlighted broader issues within the force, including extortion and unethical conduct, describing them as practices that damage public trust and must be rooted out completely.
Addressing officers, he emphasized the need for restraint and responsibility, reminding them that their primary duty is to protect lives, not endanger them.
He added that ongoing reforms are aimed at improving training, enforcing stricter oversight, and ensuring that officers operate within the law at all times.
Security analysts believe the strong message signals an attempt by police leadership to rebuild confidence and show a clear break from past practices.
As investigations into the Effurun shooting continue, many Nigerians are watching closely to see whether this renewed commitment will lead to real accountability and lasting change within the force.
