Trump Misses USA World Cup Opening Match

United States President Donald Trump did not attend his country’s opening match against Paraguay in the 2026 FIFA World Cup despite the country being one of the tournament hosts.
The decision was confirmed by officials close to the White House, who explained that the president would be unable to make the appearance because of a very tight official schedule.
Not fewer than thousands of football fans had expected Trump to be present at the stadium for the historic opening match on American soil, but plans have now changed.
Reports said Trump is expected to remain in Washington for other important engagements scheduled for the weekend.
Despite missing the game, the American leader reportedly reached out to the United States national team ahead of the encounter to send a message of encouragement.
Officials said Trump remains fully interested in the tournament and will continue to support the country’s involvement throughout the World Cup.
The United States began its World Cup journey in front of home supporters with high expectations as one of the tournament co-hosts alongside Mexico and Canada.
Football fans had earlier speculated that Trump would attend the match because host nation leaders usually make appearances during major tournament openers.
The White House however confirmed that senior government representatives would attend the match in place of the president.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup remains one of the biggest sporting events in history, with millions of fans around the world following the competition closely as action continues across North America.
