Yobe Police Arrest 240 Suspects, Secure 198 Convictions

The Yobe State Police Command has arrested 240 suspects in connection with various criminal offences recorded across the state between July and September 2026.

The Commissioner of Police, Usman Jibrin, disclosed this during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Damaturu, where he outlined the command’s recent operations and progress in tackling crime.

According to the police, the cases recorded during the period included 16 murder cases, nine rape cases, one kidnapping case, two extortion cases, five armed robbery cases and 112 other offences.

The commissioner said 198 cases had resulted in convictions, while two cases ended in acquittals. He added that 26 cases were still before the courts, 10 remained under investigation and four case files were awaiting legal advice.

The command also reported a major operation against drug-related activities, with 171 suspected drug dealers and users arrested during raids on criminal hideouts and identified black spots across the state. Police said illicit drugs, prohibited substances and dangerous weapons were recovered.

In another operation in Fika, a suspect was killed during an armed robbery operation, while another suspect was arrested in connection with a separate incident. Police also intercepted a suspect who allegedly travelled from Maiduguri to Yobe with plans to steal vehicles after killing their owners.

The command further recorded arrests linked to financial crimes. One suspect was arrested over alleged fraud and misappropriation involving N77m, while another was detained for allegedly obtaining money and goods through fake bank transfer alerts.

Two other suspects were arrested over allegations that they threatened and extorted N630,000 from two victims by threatening them with kidnapping. The police said the suspects confessed during investigation and that legal action had been initiated.

Jibrin also said the command had made progress in cases involving the alleged sexual abuse of minors and culpable homicide, with suspects arrested and investigations completed in some cases for prosecution.

He attributed the reported progress to intelligence-led policing, rapid response to criminal activities, cooperation with communities and collaboration with other security agencies.

The commissioner urged residents to continue providing credible information to the police, stressing that security remained a collective responsibility. He assured residents that the command would sustain operations aimed at protecting lives and property across Yobe State.
