NANS Proposes ₦200 Annual Dues as Requirement for NYSC Mobilisation
The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has proposed the introduction of a ₦200 annual membership due that could become a requirement for students seeking mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).
NANS President, Akinteye Babatunde, disclosed the proposal, explaining that the association is working towards a system where the dues would be collected directly from students rather than relying mainly on student union governments or tertiary institutions.
According to him, the move is being considered because many Student Union Governments (SUGs) do not regularly remit the dues expected by NANS, leaving the organisation with limited funds to carry out its activities.
Babatunde said between 80 and 90 per cent of SUGs are currently unable to remit dues to the national body, creating financial difficulties for the organisation.
He explained that the proposed ₦200 payment is intended to provide NANS with a more reliable source of funding and strengthen its ability to represent students and pursue their interests.
The NANS leadership is also seeking collaboration with relevant government agencies to establish a direct collection arrangement, which would remove institutional managements and SUGs from the payment process.
However, the proposal could generate debate among students because of the suggestion that payment may be linked to eligibility for NYSC mobilisation. NANS has not indicated that the payment is already a mandatory NYSC requirement.
The proposal comes at a time when NYSC has introduced other mobilisation requirements for prospective corps members, including the mandatory Nigeria Education Repository and Databank compliance clearance.
NANS said the proposed contribution is aimed at strengthening the financial independence of the student body rather than imposing an unnecessary burden on students, but the plan is still at the proposal stage and further details are expected on how it would be implemented.
