FG Declares Thursday Public Holiday for Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary
The Federal Government has declared Thursday, October 1, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary.
The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the declaration on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Nigerians at home and abroad and urged citizens to use the occasion to promote unity, patriotism, peaceful coexistence and mutual respect.
The minister also called on Nigerians to reflect on the sacrifices of the country’s founding fathers and their contributions to the struggle for independence.
He stressed that peace and stability remained important to national development, while expressing optimism that Nigeria could build a stronger and more prosperous future through collective effort.
The 2026 celebration marks 66 years since Nigeria gained independence from British colonial rule on October 1, 1960. The Federal Government had earlier announced that this year’s activities would be low-key.
As part of the anniversary programme, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected to deliver a nationwide broadcast to Nigerians on Thursday.
Tunji-Ojo also assured citizens that the Federal Government remained committed to strengthening national security, improving public safety and creating an environment where Nigerians can live, work and pursue their legitimate aspirations.
The minister urged Nigerians to celebrate peacefully and use the anniversary as an opportunity to reflect on the country’s journey while renewing their commitment to nation-building.
