Democracy Day: Tinubu Warns Terror Sponsors Of Tough Consequences

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared that individuals funding terrorism, banditry and kidnapping across Nigeria will face severe punishment as his government intensifies efforts to tackle insecurity.
The Nigerian leader made the strong warning on Thursday during his national address to mark the country’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration, assuring citizens that the government remains determined to protect lives and restore peace.
Not fewer than 13,000 terrorists have been eliminated in the last one year as part of ongoing military operations aimed at weakening criminal groups threatening national security.
Tinubu warned kidnappers, bandits and those secretly supporting criminal activities to surrender now or prepare to face the full power of the government.
According to him, the window for criminals to lay down their weapons peacefully will not remain open forever as authorities are becoming more aggressive in dealing with insecurity.
The President revealed that security forces have moved beyond ordinary training with foreign allies and are now carrying out more precise operations against terrorist groups in troubled areas.
He pointed out that military operations recently succeeded in destroying a major ISWAP command centre in Borno State as part of efforts to reduce attacks.
Tinubu also disclosed that over 124,000 former fighters and their family members have surrendered through the federal government’s rehabilitation programme since 2023.
Speaking further, he said the government has approved the recruitment of over 50,000 new police officers and more military personnel to strengthen security nationwide.
He added that despite security and economic challenges facing the country, his administration remains committed to defeating terrorism and ensuring Nigerians enjoy the full benefits of democracy.
