Adeleke Appeals to Tinubu to Stop Killings, Warns Against Election Violence in Osun
Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has appealed to President Bola Tinubu to urgently intervene in the wave of violence and killings reported in parts of the state ahead of the August 15 governorship election, warning that the situation could threaten peace and democracy if left unchecked.
Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting, Adeleke alleged that supporters of his party had been attacked in several communities, resulting in deaths, injuries and the destruction of property. He urged the President, as the nation’s leader, to ensure that all political parties are treated fairly throughout the election period.
The governor expressed concern over what he described as increasing political tension, saying security agencies must act professionally and prevent further bloodshed. He maintained that the people of Osun deserve to vote freely without intimidation or fear of violence.
Adeleke also warned against any attempt to manipulate the outcome of the election, insisting that the will of the electorate must be respected. He said Osun residents were determined to protect their votes and called for a transparent and credible electoral process.
Referring to Nigeria’s political history, the governor cautioned that unresolved electoral disputes had previously led to serious crises, urging all stakeholders to avoid actions capable of destabilising the state. He appealed to political leaders to put the interest of the people above partisan considerations.
The governor further called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the police and other security agencies to remain impartial and discharge their responsibilities in accordance with the law, stressing that public confidence in the election depends on their neutrality.
He urged supporters of all political parties to remain peaceful and avoid retaliatory actions despite the reported attacks, saying violence would only undermine the credibility of the electoral process and endanger innocent lives.
The appeal comes amid heightened political activities in Osun, with parties intensifying campaigns ahead of the governorship poll. Security agencies have continued to reassure residents of adequate measures to safeguard lives, property and electoral materials during the election.
