2027: Tinubu, Atiku, Obi Consider Ex-Governors for Campaign Director-General Positions
Major political parties have begun intensifying preparations for the 2027 presidential election, with President Bola Tinubu, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi reportedly considering former state governors for the crucial role of campaign director-general.
The move is part of early efforts by the leading presidential contenders to build strong campaign structures ahead of the official commencement of nationwide campaigns. Party insiders said experienced former governors are being considered because of their political influence, organisational skills and nationwide networks.
Sources within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) disclosed that President Tinubu’s camp is consulting widely before announcing a campaign director-general who can coordinate activities across the country’s six geopolitical zones and strengthen the party’s re-election bid.
Within the opposition, Atiku Abubakar is also said to be weighing several former governors with extensive political experience as he seeks to assemble a formidable campaign team capable of challenging the APC in the next general election.
Peter Obi’s supporters are equally exploring the possibility of appointing a former governor to lead his campaign organisation, believing such a choice could strengthen the Labour Party’s structure and improve coordination ahead of the polls.
Political observers believe the selection of campaign director-generals could significantly influence the direction of the presidential race, as the office is responsible for coordinating campaign strategy, fundraising, mobilisation and engagement with party stakeholders nationwide.
