Woman Caught Allegedly Smuggling Alcohol into Ogun Prison

A woman identified as Shobowale Balikis has been arrested for allegedly attempting to smuggle alcohol into the Ibara Custodial Centre in Ogun State.

Balikis was reportedly intercepted by officials of the Nigerian Correctional Service at about 3:50 p.m. on Saturday, September 26, 2026, while attempting to enter the facility with the prohibited substance.

The alcohol was allegedly concealed inside a bottled water pack and disguised as ordinary drinking water intended for an inmate at the custodial centre.

Spokesperson for the Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, Olayinka Odukoya, said vigilant officers discovered the substance during routine security checks before it could reach its intended recipient.

Following the discovery, Balikis was arrested and subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The correctional service said the interception was part of intensified efforts to prevent prohibited substances and other contraband from entering custodial facilities across the state.

Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Abioye Adesina, reiterated the command’s zero-tolerance stance on attempts to compromise security at correctional facilities.

Adesina commended the officers involved in the interception and urged personnel to remain vigilant while carrying out searches on visitors and items brought into custodial centres.

The command also warned members of the public against attempting to smuggle prohibited items to inmates, stressing that anyone caught would be handed over to the appropriate authorities for investigation and prosecution.

The latest incident comes weeks after another woman, Iyabo Sowunmi, was arrested at the same Ibara Custodial Centre for allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected illicit drugs to her son, Dare Sowunmi, who was said to be on death row.
