Early Morning Crash on Third Mainland Bridge Leaves One Dead, Raises Safety Concerns

By Ranti Thomas
A tragic road accident on the Third Mainland Bridge has claimed the life of a woman and left four others seriously injured, drawing fresh attention to safety on one of Lagos’ busiest routes.
The crash, which occurred near Iyana-Iworo in the early hours of Tuesday, involved two fully loaded commercial Toyota Sienna buses that collided head-on.
Emergency responders confirmed that the impact led to the death of an adult female, while four passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby trauma centre for urgent treatment.
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said rescue teams were deployed shortly after the incident, working alongside traffic and police authorities to manage the situation and clear the wreckage.
Preliminary findings pointed to reckless driving as the major cause of the crash, with one of the vehicles reportedly triggering the head-on collision.
Authorities described the incident as avoidable, warning motorists against dangerous overtaking, excessive speeding, and poor lane discipline—factors frequently linked to accidents on major highways.
The accident also caused temporary disruption along the busy corridor, as officials worked to restore normal traffic flow and secure the area.
Safety experts say repeated crashes on major Lagos roads highlight the urgent need for stricter enforcement of traffic laws and increased driver awareness.
They also stress the importance of maintaining vehicles properly and adhering strictly to road regulations, especially on high-speed routes like the Third Mainland Bridge.
While the injured continue to receive medical care, the incident has once again underscored the risks faced daily by commuters navigating Lagos roads.
As investigations continue, many are hoping the latest tragedy will prompt stronger compliance with safety measures to prevent further loss of life on the city’s highways.
