The Federal Government has expressed its appreciation for the Super Eagles’ performance at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, assuring the team that Nigerians remain proud of their efforts despite falling at the semi-final stage.
In a statement on Thursday, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, lauded the players for showcasing resilience, discipline, and national pride throughout the tournament.
“Nigeria is proud of you,” Idris said, highlighting the team’s character, teamwork, and determination even in defeat.
He noted that the Super Eagles’ dedication on the field reflected the spirit of the national colours, emphasizing that commitment and effort were just as important as the outcome. “Your courage and unity on the pitch speak volumes about the values you represent for the nation,” the minister said.
Idris added that the team reminded Nigerians that wearing the green and white is about more than winning—it symbolizes perseverance, unity, and the courage to never give up.
“Your performance has inspired Nigerians at home and abroad. Football has its ups and downs, but your determination and professionalism throughout the tournament deserve recognition and gratitude,” he said.
The minister encouraged the squad to stay united, learn from the experience, and come back stronger, assuring them that the country stands firmly behind them.
“Keep your heads high, remain focused, and return stronger. Nigeria appreciates the excitement and hope you brought to the nation during this competition,” Idris said.
The Super Eagles exited the tournament on Wednesday after a 4–2 defeat in a penalty shootout against host nation Morocco, following a goalless draw after extra time at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium.
The match was closely contested, with Morocco dominating possession and registering 16 attempts compared to Nigeria’s two. Exceptional goalkeeping from Stanley Nwabali and Yassine Bounou kept the game level, while Nigeria’s key forwards, Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, struggled to penetrate the Moroccan defence, allowing the hosts to advance to the final via penalties.
