The University of Lagos has announced that 617 out of its 10,584 undergraduate students will graduate with First Class honours at the institution’s 56th convocation ceremonies scheduled for next week.
The figure accounts for 5.8 per cent of the total number of undergraduates completing their studies at the Akoka-based institution.
In total, 16,506 graduands are expected to be awarded various qualifications during the convocation exercises, including first degrees, postgraduate degrees, diplomas and certificates. The ceremonies will take place between January 20 and 22 at different venues across the university campus.
Speaking at a press briefing on Wednesday at the Senate Building, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, provided a breakdown of the graduating students. She disclosed that 10,584 candidates will receive first degrees and diplomas, while 5,782 will graduate from postgraduate programmes. An additional 140 participants will be awarded certificates from the UNILAG Business School.
Ogunsola also revealed that Umeozor Benedict of the Department of Business Administration, Faculty of Management Sciences, emerged as the overall best graduating student after recording a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.0.
Further analysis of the undergraduate results shows that, aside from the 617 First Class graduates, 92 students earned distinctions, 4,543 obtained Second Class Upper Division, and 3,910 graduated with Second Class Lower Division. A total of 1,023 students will receive Third Class degrees, 69 earned Pass degrees, while 330 candidates fall under the unclassified category.
For postgraduate programmes, the vice-chancellor noted that 502 graduands achieved distinctions, while 5,420 will be awarded pass degrees.
More details are expected as the convocation ceremonies draw closer.
