Sokoto Boat Tragedy: 46 Bodies Recovered as Search Continues

Not fewer than 46 bodies have been recovered following a devastating boat accident in Sokoto State, as rescue workers continue searching for other passengers feared missing.
The tragedy occurred in Gorau community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, when a boat carrying 77 passengers, including men, women and children, capsized while transporting farmers and other passengers to rice farms.
The Sokoto State Police Command confirmed that 46 bodies had been recovered, while 15 passengers were rescued alive.
However, the search was still continuing for the remaining 16 passengers who were yet to be accounted for as of the latest update.
Police spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, said local divers were working alongside officials of the National Emergency Management Agency, Sokoto State Emergency Management Agency and the police in the rescue operation.
The exact cause of the accident had not been established at the time of the report, while emergency teams and local divers continued their search.
The disaster has thrown the Gorau community into mourning, with families anxiously waiting for news about relatives who were on board the boat.
The incident also came a year after another boat accident was reported in Kijio community, also in Goronyo Local Government Area, highlighting continuing concerns over water transportation safety in the area.
The number of recovered bodies could still change as the rescue operation continues.
