Osun Poll: Adeleke, Oyebamiji Commit to Peace as INEC Issues Warning
Major contenders in the August 15 Osun State governorship election, Governor Ademola Adeleke and the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, have joined 12 other candidates in signing a peace accord ahead of the poll. The agreement is aimed at ensuring a peaceful, credible and violence-free election.
The peace pact was signed during a ceremony organised by the National Peace Committee in collaboration with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), with political parties pledging to conduct their campaigns and election activities without violence or intimidation.
Speaking at the event, INEC warned politicians, their supporters and other stakeholders against actions capable of disrupting the electoral process, stressing that anyone found instigating violence or violating electoral laws would face the full weight of the law.
Security agencies also assured residents that adequate measures had been put in place to protect voters, election officials and electoral materials before, during and after the governorship election.
Religious and traditional leaders urged all contestants to honour the peace agreement by accepting the outcome of the election through lawful means and avoiding inflammatory statements capable of creating tension across the state.
The governorship election is expected to be keenly contested, with political parties intensifying campaigns in the final days before voters head to the polls to choose the state’s next governor.
