Kidnap Suspect Says He Lost Ransom To Betting

By Ranti Thomas
A suspected kidnapper has reportedly confessed that he spent ransom money collected from victims on sports betting, shocking residents and security officials during interrogation.
The suspect, who was arrested by security operatives alongside other members of his gang, allegedly admitted that a large part of the money obtained from kidnapping activities was lost through repeated gambling on football matches.
According to investigators, the suspect made the confession while explaining how the gang shared and spent proceeds from several abductions carried out in different communities.
Security sources said the suspect told investigators he became addicted to betting and continued staking large amounts of money despite suffering heavy losses.
The confession reportedly emerged during an investigation into a kidnapping syndicate accused of terrorising residents and demanding huge ransom payments from families of victims.
Authorities said several items were recovered during the operation, while efforts are ongoing to arrest other members of the group still on the run.
The suspect’s statement has triggered reactions online, with many Nigerians expressing concern over the growing influence of gambling addiction among young people and criminal groups.
Some residents also questioned how ransom funds meant for criminal operations were diverted into betting activities instead of being traced by authorities earlier.
Security experts have repeatedly warned that criminal networks often spend proceeds from illegal activities on gambling, luxury lifestyles, and other risky habits.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies assured the public that investigations are continuing and that everyone connected to the kidnapping ring would be brought to justice.
The case has also renewed conversations around rising insecurity, youth unemployment, and the increasing popularity of sports betting across the country.
