INEC Displays Tinubu, Shettima’s Credentials for Public Scrutiny Ahead of 2027 Polls
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the public display of the personal particulars and academic credentials submitted by President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima for the 2027 presidential election, allowing Nigerians to examine the documents in line with the Electoral Act.
The exercise, which began on Saturday at INEC offices across the country, is a legal requirement designed to promote transparency in the electoral process. It gives members of the public the opportunity to inspect the documents submitted by candidates before the election.
Among the documents displayed is President Tinubu’s Form EC9, which contains details of his educational qualifications, including his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Chicago State University in the United States. The form also includes his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) discharge certificate and employment history.
Vice President Kashim Shettima’s documents were also displayed. They contain his personal particulars, academic credentials, affidavit and other information required under Nigeria’s electoral laws for candidates seeking public office.
INEC explained that the publication of Form EC9 is a statutory obligation under Section 29(3) of the Electoral Act, 2026, which requires the commission to publicly display the credentials and particulars submitted by candidates sponsored by political parties.
The commission stated that any Nigerian who wishes to verify the documents can visit designated INEC offices to inspect them. It also noted that certified true copies of nomination forms and other submitted documents can be obtained through the appropriate legal process.
Under the Electoral Act, anyone who believes a candidate submitted false information or forged documents has the right to challenge such claims in court within the period provided by law. INEC stressed that the public display is intended to strengthen accountability and confidence in the electoral process.
The publication of the credentials marks another major step in preparations for the 2027 general election. Campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections are scheduled to begin later this month in accordance with INEC’s approved timetable.
