I Did Not Declare for Presidency – Datti Baba-Ahmed

Datti Baba-Ahmed, the former vice-presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has refuted claims that he recently announced plans to run for Nigeria’s presidency, insisting that reports suggesting such a move are inaccurate.

The clarification came amid growing speculation triggered by media and social media narratives that interpreted his recent comments as an early signal of presidential ambition ahead of the next general election.

Addressing the issue on Channels Television on Friday, Baba-Ahmed said no declaration was made at any point, stressing that his words were taken out of context. “I never declared to contest the presidency two days ago,” he stated.

He explained that his recent public statements were limited to reaffirming his continued membership of the Labour Party amid ongoing political discussions surrounding the party’s future and leadership direction.

Baba-Ahmed acknowledged that while political possibilities could arise in the future, no decision or declaration has been made at this time. He emphasised that speculation should not be mistaken for official intent.

“Two days ago, what I did was simply say that I remain in the Labour Party. I never declared to contest the presidency, even though there could be a possibility of that happening,” he stated.

He further noted that any formal declaration would depend on the Independent National Electoral Commission’s timetable and the Labour Party’s internal processes. “One will have to wait for the INEC timetable and for the party to call for people to indicate interest. I did not declare,” he added.

Baba-Ahmed also criticised the role of social media in spreading misinformation, urging professional media organisations to uphold accuracy and context in their reporting.

“It is unfortunate that social media can be so sensational, putting out wrong narratives to emotional listeners. Formal media should serve as filters and barriers so that the public always receives the correct information,” he said.
