Counterfeit Dollars Trigger EFCC Probe After Kano Arrest

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has launched an investigation into Usaini Ibrahim following his arrest in Kano with counterfeit United States currency worth $212,200.

Ibrahim was arrested on September 3, 2026, by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency along Maiduguri Road in Kano after the fake dollar notes were discovered. The NDLEA later transferred him and the recovered currency to the EFCC for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The handover took place at the EFCC Kano Zonal Directorate, where the commission’s Acting Zonal Director, ACE1 Friday S. Ebelo, received the suspect and the exhibits from Deputy Superintendent of Narcotics Yahaya Labaran, who represented the NDLEA.

The investigation is expected to establish where the counterfeit currency came from, how it was intended to be used and whether other people were involved in the alleged operation.

The case has also drawn attention to the use of fake foreign currency in fraudulent schemes. The EFCC warned that counterfeit dollars can be used to lure victims with promises of quick profits or money-doubling arrangements.

Ebelo urged members of the public to be cautious of individuals offering suspicious investment or money-doubling opportunities, stressing that such schemes can expose unsuspecting people to financial losses and criminal investigations.

The EFCC said Ibrahim remains in its custody while investigators work to unravel the circumstances surrounding the counterfeit currency and determine whether additional offences are connected to the case.

The commission said the suspect will be arraigned in court after the completion of the investigation. Until then, the allegations against him remain subject to the outcome of the legal process.
