FIFA Orders Fans To Pay After Ticketing Glitch Gives Free World Cup Seats

The world football governing body, FIFA, has said supporters who mistakenly received free tickets for the 2026 World Cup following a system error will now be required to pay the correct amount or risk losing their seats.
The organisation confirmed that about 60 fans were affected after a glitch on its ticketing platform caused some tickets to be processed at “0 USD” during checkout. FIFA said the error was linked to a payment issue that occurred in the system.
According to the governing body, the affected supporters have been contacted and informed that their tickets remain reserved, but payment must now be completed within a limited period.
FIFA explained that while the tickets were temporarily issued due to the technical error, they were never intended to be free and therefore must be paid for at the official price to remain valid.
Reports indicate that the affected fans have been given about seven days to complete payment or risk having their tickets cancelled and reallocated to other buyers.
The World Cup ticketing process has already faced scrutiny in recent months, with concerns over pricing structures, demand-based pricing models and availability of seats for fans across different regions.
FIFA, however, maintains that it is working to ensure a fair and transparent ticket distribution system for the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico.
The organisation has also assured fans that it is reviewing its ticketing systems to prevent similar technical errors from occurring again in future sales phases.
The development adds to ongoing debates around World Cup ticket accessibility, as millions of fans continue to compete for limited seats ahead of one of the world’s biggest sporting events.
