Niger Mining Arrest Turns Deadly As 33 Suspects Feared Dead

A major security operation against illegal mining in Niger State has taken a disturbing turn after 33 of the arrested miners were reportedly feared dead while in custody.

The suspected illegal miners were among scores of people arrested by the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps during operations conducted across parts of the state between September 15 and 16, 2026.

The deaths were reportedly discovered on Thursday morning at a detention facility in Minna, shortly after the suspects had been taken into custody during the anti-illegal mining operation.

The Niger State Commandant of the NSCDC, Suberu Aniviye, confirmed that several detainees had died but did not give an official figure. He said the corps suspected that a disease outbreak may have been responsible for the deaths.

The bodies were subsequently taken to the General Hospital, Minna, where medical authorities are expected to examine them and establish the actual cause of death.

A source at the hospital, however, put the number of deceased detainees at 33 and said diphtheria was suspected. The figure and suspected cause of death had not been independently confirmed by the NSCDC at the time of the report.

The incident has generated concern in communities including M.I. Wushishi and Mekunkle, where residents reportedly reacted after news of the deaths emerged. The development has also placed attention on the health conditions of people detained during security operations.

The NSCDC launched the operation as part of efforts to curb illegal mining, an activity authorities have linked to environmental degradation, criminal networks and the loss of government revenue.

Commandant Aniviye appealed for calm as investigations continue, saying the corps would work with relevant agencies to properly manage the situation. He also said the NSCDC remained committed to protecting the rights of people in its custody.

The medical examination of the bodies is expected to provide clearer answers on what happened to the detainees and whether any infectious disease outbreak occurred at the detention facility. Until those findings are released, the reported death toll and cause remain subject to official confirmation.
