2027 Campaigns Begin as Tinubu, Obi, Duke, Sowore Sign Peace Accord

The race for the 2027 presidency formally entered a new phase as political parties and candidates began campaigns after signing a peace accord aimed at preventing violence and promoting issue-based electioneering.
President Bola Tinubu, Labour Party’s Peter Obi, former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke and African Action Congress candidate Omoyele Sowore were among the major political figures involved in the peace agreement.
Tinubu was represented at the signing ceremony in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.
The accord was facilitated by the National Peace Committee and brought together political leaders, candidates and other stakeholders ahead of the presidential and National Assembly elections.

The candidates and political parties committed themselves to peaceful campaigns and agreed to discourage violence, hate speech, fake news, intimidation and other actions that could threaten the electoral process.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, said political campaigns should focus on policies, programmes and ideas rather than personal attacks and inflammatory statements.

Former Head of State and Chairman of the National Peace Committee, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, also urged politicians and their supporters to respect the agreement and avoid actions capable of causing unrest.
However, Sowore questioned the seriousness of the peace accord following Tinubu’s absence from the ceremony, despite the President being represented by Akume.
As campaigns begin across the country, the real test of the peace agreement will be how political parties, candidates and their supporters conduct themselves in the months leading to the 2027 general election.
