Ooni Urges Peace, Unity Ahead Of Osun Governorship Election
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has appealed to politicians, supporters and residents of Osun State to embrace peace and avoid actions capable of threatening the stability of the state ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
The monarch made the call as political activities intensify ahead of the August 15, 2026, Osun governorship election, stressing that the interest of the people and the development of the state must remain above political differences.
The Ooni, who has consistently advocated peaceful coexistence, urged all political actors to conduct their campaigns with respect, tolerance and a sense of responsibility, warning against violence and activities that could disrupt the electoral process.
He stated that elections should provide an opportunity for citizens to make informed choices based on ideas, policies and development plans rather than become a period of tension and division.
The traditional ruler’s latest appeal came when political leaders and governorship candidates visited the palace in Ile-Ife to seek royal blessings ahead of their campaigns.
The Ooni reaffirmed his commitment to promoting peace across Osun State regardless of political affiliations, noting that Ile-Ife remains a symbol of unity and an important centre of Yoruba history and culture.
He encouraged candidates and their supporters to prioritise peaceful engagement, respect the rule of law and allow the electoral process to determine the choice of the people.
The monarch’s warning comes amid growing political activities in Osun, where parties are preparing for the governorship contest involving major political actors seeking to lead the state.
Ahead of the election, several stakeholders, including civil society groups and political organisations, have also called for issue-based campaigns and peaceful participation to ensure a credible and violence-free poll.
The Ooni urged residents of Osun to remain calm and united, stressing that the state’s future should not be sacrificed because of political competition.
He added that whoever emerges victorious must be supported in delivering good governance, while those who lose should respect the decision of voters and continue contributing positively to the development of the state.
The monarch’s message adds to ongoing efforts by stakeholders to promote a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the Osun governorship election.
