Opposition Shake-Up: Obi, Kwankwaso Exit Triggers Lawmakers’ Defection to NDC

By Ranti Thomas
Nigeria’s opposition space is witnessing a major realignment as Peter Obi and Rabiu Kwankwaso dumped the African Democratic Congress, setting off a wave of defections in the National Assembly.
Within days of their exit, no fewer than 18 federal lawmakers—comprising members of the House of Representatives and a senator—moved to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, signalling a significant shift in political loyalty.
The lawmakers, drawn from several states including Kano, Anambra, Lagos, Edo, Rivers, and Kogi, cited deep internal divisions and unresolved crises within the ADC as the driving force behind their departure.
During plenary, presiding officers read out defection letters in which the legislators described the party’s instability as stretching from grassroots structures to national leadership.
The mass movement is widely seen as a direct consequence of Obi and Kwankwaso’s departure, with many of the defectors believed to be politically aligned with the two leaders.
Their switch to the NDC has quickly transformed the party into a new rallying point for opposition figures seeking a more stable platform ahead of the 2027 elections.
The development comes at a time when opposition parties had been exploring coalition talks to present a united front against the ruling government.
However, analysts say the latest defections expose deep cracks within the opposition, with disagreements over leadership, strategy, and control of party structures continuing to fuel divisions.
The ADC, which had recently positioned itself as a major opposition force, has now seen its legislative strength sharply reduced, raising concerns about its future relevance.
Despite the losses, party officials insist the situation does not threaten its core structure, maintaining that its support base extends beyond elected officeholders.
Observers note that the rapid shift of lawmakers highlights how influential political figures can reshape party dynamics almost instantly.
As alignments continue to change, the race toward 2027 is already being defined by defections, alliances, and the search for a stronger opposition platform.
