Titles often follow great men, but in rare cases they struggle to capture the full measure of the person who bears them. George Adesola Oguntade is one such man. Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria (retired), former Justice of the Court of Appeal, former Judge of the Lagos High Court, Life Bencher of the Nigerian Bar, High Commissioner of Nigeria to the United Kingdom from 2017 to 2020, Lisa of Lagos, Asiwaju of Epe, Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese, Chancellor of Lagos State University, respected legal scholar, statesman and elder. These titles are many, yet they still circle around the essence of the man they describe.
Justice Oguntade was born 86 years ago into heritage and tradition. On his father’s side, he comes from a royal family in Ijebu Ode, while his mother’s roots trace to Epe in Lagos State. From these two proud lineages emerged a man who would one day rise to national prominence in the temple of justice.
Raised in a Christian home, Oguntade grew up with strong values that would later define his life: integrity, discipline and a deep sense of responsibility. His education laid the foundation for a remarkable legal career, shaping a mind that would later command respect in courtrooms across the country.
Few people know that before his legal career fully took shape, Oguntade in his late twenties was already active as a merchant and businessman. At the time, he showed the instincts of a sharp entrepreneur. Many who knew him then believed he could have become one of the great business magnates of Lagos, perhaps rising to the level of celebrated industrialists like Razaq Okoya.
But destiny had another path for him. The law called, and Oguntade answered. When he entered the legal profession, his brilliance quickly became evident. His dedication and mastery of legal reasoning distinguished him among his peers.
His reputation grew rapidly during his years at the Lagos High Court, where his judgments showed depth, clarity and uncommon courage. Lawyers who appeared before him often spoke of his sharp mind and fearless interpretation of the law.

His elevation to the Supreme Court of Nigeria marked the peak of a judicial journey built on hard work and unwavering commitment to justice. On the nation’s highest bench, he contributed to important legal interpretations that shaped Nigerian jurisprudence.
History also remembers that during one of Nigeria’s most closely watched election disputes, Justice Oguntade stood apart from the majority of the court, delivering a dissenting view that supported Muhammadu Buhari as the rightful winner of the contest. It was a position that demonstrated his courage to stand by his conviction even when others disagreed.
Beyond the courtroom, Oguntade is also known as a philanthropist. Over the years, he has quietly supported many young Nigerians through scholarships that span primary school, secondary school and university education, believing strongly that education remains the most powerful path to national progress.
He is also involved in education at an institutional level, co-owning one of the country’s respected schools that operates under a British academic standard, further reflecting his commitment to learning and intellectual development.
Justice Oguntade’s life is also blessed with a strong family legacy. His children have grown into remarkable professionals in their own right barristers, Senior Advocates of Nigeria, judges and accomplished figures in various fields, continuing the family tradition of excellence.
In a country that sometimes forgets to celebrate its living legends, Oguntade stands among the few towering figures still alive today alongside names such as Razaq Okoya, Rilwan Akiolu, and other distinguished personalities whose lives have shaped modern Nigeria.
Many scholars and legal thinkers have also written books and academic works about his judgments and legal philosophy, recognising him as a towering authority in Nigerian jurisprudence.
Today, as colleagues, students and admirers reflect on his journey, they see not just a retired judge but a titan of the Nigerian legal system, a man whose name commands respect across the bench and the bar.
Justice Oguntade’s story is the story of discipline, vision and moral strength. Like the eagle that rises high above the mountains, he soared through the courts of Nigeria with clarity of purpose and unwavering honour.
