Fire Breaks Out at Federal Mortgage Bank Headquarters in Abuja

A fire incident has affected the headquarters of the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria (FMBN) in Abuja, triggering a large-scale emergency response as firefighters battled to prevent the blaze from spreading to other parts of the building. The incident occurred on Saturday at the bank’s headquarters in the Central Business District, opposite the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The fire was reported to have started on the fourth floor before spreading to the upper section of the multi-storey building. Thick smoke billowed from the structure as emergency responders arrived with several fire trucks to contain the inferno.
Officials of the Federal Fire Service and other emergency agencies worked for hours to bring the situation under control, while security personnel cordoned off the area to keep residents and passers-by at a safe distance.
Eyewitnesses said flames engulfed parts of the top floor as firefighters continued efforts to stop the fire from spreading to other offices within the building. The incident attracted workers, motorists and residents who gathered nearby to watch the rescue operation.
As of the time of reporting, the cause of the fire had not been established. Authorities also said there was no immediate confirmation of casualties or injuries, while the extent of damage to office equipment and official documents was still being assessed.
The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria plays a key role in the country’s housing sector by providing mortgage financing and managing the National Housing Fund scheme. The incident has raised concerns about possible disruption to some of the bank’s operations.
Authorities are expected to launch a full investigation after the fire is completely extinguished to determine what caused the outbreak and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
