FG Replaces NYSC Khaki With Adire In Major Reform

The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the traditional National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) khaki uniform with locally produced Adire fabric as part of sweeping reforms aimed at repositioning the scheme.
Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed the development on Thursday, explaining that the move is designed to promote local manufacturing and ensure government spending directly benefits Nigeria’s economy.
According to the minister, the decision aligns with efforts to strengthen the country’s textile industry, noting that Adire is already being produced in states such as Ogun and Kwara, making it a practical alternative to the long-standing khaki uniform.
Beyond the uniform change, the Federal Government also revealed that corps members will increasingly be deployed based on their academic qualifications and professional backgrounds rather than the existing general posting system.
Officials say the reforms are part of a wider restructuring of the 53-year-old scheme aimed at making NYSC more skills-driven, economically impactful, and better aligned with national development goals.
