Oyo Approves N3bn Cocoa Revival Plan

By Daniel Ojukwu
The Oyo State government has approved over ₦3 billion for a new initiative aimed at restoring cocoa production as a major economic activity in the state.
The plan, called the Cocoa Rejuvenation Project, will be coordinated by the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency in partnership with the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture.
According to the state government, the initiative seeks to position Oyo as a key supplier of cocoa, especially given recent production challenges in major West African cocoa-producing countries. The project will be funded in three installments over the next three years.
The government also reaffirmed its support for enhanced state security, noting the importance of local policing due to declining youth interest in military service. The council highlighted the acquisition of two surveillance aircraft and ongoing support for the Amotekun security outfit, which is now considered one of the best-equipped in the region.
In addition, the council approved a €50 million fund for the Oyo State Health Care Initiative to improve hospital infrastructure and medical equipment, while also green-lighting the Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Policy. This policy is expected to provide safe sanitation, reduce open defecation, and promote hygiene across communities.
Oyo State is also moving forward with climate and green energy plans, approving policies and authorizing a Green Energy Agency to implement initiatives, supported by a ₦270 million bank guarantee.
The government said these steps reflect a broader effort to strengthen the state’s economy, health, security, and environmental sustainability.
