Nigeria’s Inner Bar Expands as CJN Admits 68 New Senior Advocates
Nigeria’s legal profession has welcomed 68 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SANs), following their formal swearing-in by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, at the ceremony marking the 2026/2027 Legal Year.
The ceremony, held on Monday, October 12, 2026, formally admitted the successful candidates into the Inner Bar, a distinguished rank reserved for legal practitioners recognised for exceptional professional achievement in advocacy or legal scholarship.
The Nigerian Television Authority reported the development, sharing footage and images of the newly admitted advocates taking their oath.
The new SANs comprise 67 legal practitioners elevated under the advocacy category and one academic, Professor Nnamdi Onyeka Obiaraeri, whose elevation was based on contributions to legal scholarship.
Their elevation followed the decision of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee at its 174th plenary session held on July 23, 2026, under the chairmanship of the Chief Justice of Nigeria.
The rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria is among the highest professional distinctions in the country’s legal system. It recognises outstanding achievement in legal practice, particularly courtroom advocacy, as well as significant contributions to legal education and scholarship.

The conferment process also required the successful candidates to participate in a mandatory induction programme before the formal ceremony. The requirement was designed to prepare the new SANs for the responsibilities and professional standards associated with the rank.
The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee had earlier reminded the candidates of ethical restrictions governing publicity surrounding their elevation. The rules prohibit the publication or sponsorship of advertisements, congratulatory messages and goodwill notices relating to their nomination or conferment, with violations potentially attracting disciplinary sanctions.
The annual conferment is an important event in Nigeria’s legal calendar, recognising practitioners whose work has earned them distinction within the profession. It also places expectations on the new SANs to uphold professional ethics, strengthen the administration of justice and contribute to the development of Nigerian jurisprudence.
With the swearing-in completed, the 68 new Senior Advocates join the ranks of legal practitioners who hold the prestigious title, marking a significant milestone in their professional careers.
Their elevation comes with the responsibility to maintain the standards expected of members of the Inner Bar and to support the rule of law, fairness and public confidence in the justice system.
