INEC Assures Osun Voters of Free, Fair Poll as Election Nears
The Independent National Electoral Commission has assured political parties, candidates and voters that Saturday’s Osun State governorship election will be conducted in a transparent and credible manner, as preparations enter their final stage.
INEC said it was committed to providing a level playing field for all contestants and ensuring that the outcome of the election reflects the votes cast by the people.
The assurance comes amid heightened security across Osun, with electoral authorities and security agencies completing arrangements for the August 15, 2026 governorship poll. President Bola Tinubu has also called on INEC and security agencies to ensure that the election is peaceful, transparent and credible.
Ahead of the election, INEC announced that 1,906,390 of the 2,339,233 registered voters in the state had collected their Permanent Voter Cards, representing 81.50 per cent of eligible voters. The remaining 432,843 uncollected cards were deposited with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
The commission said its preparations were designed to ensure an orderly exercise across the 30 local government areas of the state, while urging voters and other stakeholders to cooperate with electoral officials.
With political tension rising in the final hours before the poll, attention will be on INEC’s ability to deliver on its promise and ensure that voting, collation and the declaration of results are carried out in a manner that commands public confidence.
