The Federal Government has declared Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as public holidays to mark this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebration across the country.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through a statement issued by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, on Monday in Abuja.
According to the Federal Government, the declaration reflects respect for the spiritual importance of Eid-ul-Adha to millions of Muslims in Nigeria and around the world.
Tunji-Ojo congratulated Muslim faithful in Nigeria and the diaspora, describing the celebration as a period rooted in sacrifice, obedience to God, and compassion toward others.
The minister also urged Nigerians to use the holiday period to pray for peace, unity, security, and progress in the country amid ongoing national challenges.
Eid-el-Kabir, also known as Eid-ul-Adha, is one of the most important festivals in Islam and is observed globally by Muslims through prayers, charity, and animal sacrifice.
As preparations for the celebration continue, increased movement of travelers has already been noticed in several parts of the country, especially major cities and transport hubs.
Some state governments have also begun issuing safety and environmental guidelines ahead of the festivities. In Lagos, authorities warned against displaying or selling rams and livestock on highways and other unauthorized public spaces.
The Federal Government wished Muslims a peaceful and joyful celebration while calling on Nigerians to embrace unity, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence during the festive period.
