Suarez Reopens Uruguay Door Ahead of 2026 World Cup Push

Uruguay football legend Luis Suárez has hinted at a possible international comeback, saying he would never reject a call from his country if needed for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The veteran striker, who stepped away from international football in 2024 after tensions with Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa, appears to have softened his earlier stance.
Speaking during media duties with Inter Miami CF, Suárez admitted he regretted some of the comments he made after leaving the national team and confirmed he has already apologised privately.
The 39-year-old explained that his original decision to retire was partly to allow younger players more opportunities within the Uruguay squad.
However, with the World Cup approaching, the former Barcelona and Liverpool forward said representing Uruguay would always remain special to him and impossible to fully rule out.
Suárez remains Uruguay’s all-time leading scorer with 69 goals in 143 appearances and has featured in four FIFA World Cups during his career.
His international journey has included some of football’s most memorable moments, from leading Uruguay to the 2011 Copa America title to controversial incidents that kept him constantly in global headlines.
Despite nearing the end of his career, Suárez insists his passion for football remains strong, pointing to his continued performances in Major League Soccer with Inter Miami.
Football analysts believe his experience could still be valuable for Uruguay, especially in a major tournament where leadership and composure often become decisive.
The possibility of a return also adds fresh intrigue to Uruguay’s preparations under Marcelo Bielsa, particularly after previous reports suggested relations between both men had broken down badly.
For many Uruguay fans, the idea of seeing Suárez wear the national colours one more time before retirement would represent a fitting final chapter to one of the country’s greatest football careers.
