30 killed, many abducted in Niger

At least 30 villagers have been killed and many others taken away after armed men believed to be bandits attacked a busy village market in Niger State.
The attackers stormed Kasuwan Daji market in Demo village, Kabe District of Borgu Local Government Area, set shops on fire, looted food items and shot at residents before escaping with their captives.
The attack happened on Saturday afternoon when the gunmen reportedly arrived through routes linked to the Kainji Lake National Park forest. Witnesses said the market was crowded when the assailants opened fire, causing panic as traders and buyers ran for safety.
Confirming the incident, the Niger State Police Command said a joint team of security operatives had visited the area. The police disclosed that more than 30 people lost their lives during the assault, while several others were abducted and taken towards the forest.
According to the police, the attackers burned down the market, broke into shops and made away with large quantities of food and other goods. They also shot villagers and seized many people along bush paths leading into the national park.
The police said efforts are ongoing to rescue those kidnapped, adding that security agencies are working together to track the attackers and prevent further violence in the area. Residents have been urged to remain calm while investigations continue.
This latest incident comes barely weeks after a major abduction in Niger State. On November 21, 2025, gunmen invaded St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Agwara Local Government Area, and kidnapped hundreds of pupils and teachers during a night raid.
Although some of the abducted students later escaped and others were freed through government efforts, the repeated attacks have heightened fear among communities living close to forest areas, especially around Kainji Lake National Park.
