2027 Elections: INEC Records 3.4 Million Fresh Registrations

The Independent National Electoral Commission has registered over 3.4 million new voters in the ongoing second phase of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise nationwide.

The commission disclosed that a total of 3,441,121 registrations were completed as of April 3, combining both online pre-registration and physical walk-ins across the country.

According to INEC, 2,068,384 Nigerians registered online, while 1,372,737 others completed the process physically at designated centres.

State-by-state data showed that Jigawa recorded the highest number of registrants with 201,047, followed by Lagos with 181,095 and Kano with 177,681.

Young Nigerians dominated the registration figures, with those aged between 18 and 34 accounting for 2,354,768 voters, representing over 68 per cent of the total.

Gender distribution showed a higher turnout among women, as 1,922,143 females registered compared to 1,518,978 males.

On occupation, students formed the largest group of new voters with 1,235,931 registrations. This was followed by business owners and those involved in farming and fishing.

INEC also revealed that 48,330 Persons with Disabilities successfully registered during the exercise.

The commission noted that the figures remain provisional, pending data clean-up and verification using the Automated Biometric Identification System.

It added that voter registration is currently suspended in the Federal Capital Territory in line with the Electoral Act, while urging eligible Nigerians to complete their registration before the deadline.
