Nigeria Faces Rare Ebola Strain as Officials Intensify Efforts to Contain Abuja Case
Nigeria’s response to its first confirmed Ebola case has taken on greater urgency following the identification of the Bundibugyo strain, a relatively rare variant of the virus that has been linked to the ongoing outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Health officials disclosed the strain identification at an emergency meeting on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, following laboratory investigations into the infection detected in Abuja. The development has heightened attention on surveillance, contact tracing and the country’s capacity to prevent further transmission.
Olajumoke Babatunde, Director of Public Health Laboratory Services at the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC), said the laboratory conducted three levels of molecular testing before confirming that the infection was caused by the Bundibugyo strain.
An official at the meeting also disclosed that the patient was a diplomat. Reports from the meeting indicated that her condition had deteriorated into multiple-organ failure, although further details about her clinical status were not immediately available.
The case involves a woman with a recent travel history to Uganda who tested positive for Ebola after seeking medical attention at a private health facility in Abuja. According to information provided by health authorities, her symptoms began on October 7, four days after her arrival in Nigeria, and she sought treatment on October 11. Laboratory confirmation was obtained on October 20.
The patient has been isolated and is receiving medical care, while health authorities continue investigations to establish the likely source of infection and reconstruct her travel and exposure history.
The NCDC has identified 44 contacts linked to the case, who are being monitored for symptoms and possible exposure. Authorities are also strengthening infection prevention and control measures at the health facility where the patient initially received treatment.
The identification of the Bundibugyo strain is particularly significant because it differs from the Zaire strain responsible for several major Ebola outbreaks. Vaccines and treatments developed for one Ebola virus species may not provide protection against another, making accurate identification essential to guiding public health responses.
The current outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has raised concerns across the region, with other countries also reporting cases linked to the spread of the virus. Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported infection has therefore increased the importance of regional cooperation, timely information-sharing and heightened disease surveillance.
Health authorities are relying on contact tracing, laboratory testing, isolation and infection control to limit the risk of onward transmission. The World Health Organisation is supporting Nigerian agencies with case investigations, protective equipment and other response measures.
The development also places renewed emphasis on the need for healthcare workers to recognise possible Ebola symptoms, apply appropriate protective procedures and promptly report suspected infections, particularly where patients have a relevant travel history.
Although the confirmation of the strain presents a serious public health concern, authorities have urged vigilance and a coordinated response rather than panic. Nigeria previously contained an Ebola outbreak in 2014, experience that public health officials can draw upon while responding to the present case.
The immediate priority remains monitoring identified contacts, determining the source of infection and preventing additional cases as the country strengthens its emergency response.
