Kogi APC Chairman Killed on Highway as Gunmen Abduct Passenger

The Chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa, has been killed by gunmen who attacked his vehicle along a major road in the state.

The attack happened on Thursday at about 5pm along the Itobe-Ochadamu Expressway, around Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area, according to the Kogi State Police Command.

Police said the attackers emerged from the surrounding bush and opened fire on motorists travelling along the road.

Yunusa, who was driving a blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH, was found dead inside the vehicle after the gunmen fled the area.

Another person who was travelling in the vehicle was taken away by the attackers and forced into the nearby bush.

The Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Lokoja on Friday.

She said the deceased’s body had been taken to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy, while security operatives had begun efforts to locate the abducted passenger.

The police said the operation involves the command and other security agencies, with personnel searching the surrounding forest in an attempt to rescue the victim and track down those responsible for the attack.

The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, has ordered intensified security operations along the affected road and directed officers to ensure that the attackers are brought to justice.

The latest incident adds to growing security concerns in Kogi, where highways and communities have recently witnessed cases of kidnapping.

Police authorities have appealed to motorists and residents living around the area to remain alert and immediately report suspicious movements to security agencies.

The command said it would provide further information as the investigation and search operation continue.
