Gusau Exit Throws Nigerian Football Leadership Into Fresh Uncertainty

The Nigeria Football Federation has been plunged into a major leadership transition after Ibrahim Musa Gusau, General Secretary Dr Mohammed Sanusi and members of the federation’s Executive Committee resigned from their positions on Thursday.

The NFF officially confirmed the mass resignation, although the federation’s statement did not give specific reasons for the decision. Gusau later formally announced his resignation at the NFF headquarters in Abuja.

The development comes at a difficult time for Nigerian football, with the country facing serious concerns over the performance of its national teams and the overall direction of football administration.

The Super Eagles failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, while the Super Falcons also missed out on qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, adding to the pressure surrounding the federation.

Gusau had been leading the NFF since 2022, but his administration has faced increasing criticism as Nigeria’s national teams struggled to meet expectations in major international competitions.

The latest resignation has also created uncertainty around the federation’s planned electoral process. The NFF had been preparing for an elective congress scheduled for September 27 in Lafia, Nasarawa State, but the leadership changes have now raised questions about whether the timetable will remain unchanged.
