Francis Duru Dies At 57 After Brief Illness
Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has died at the age of 57, leaving colleagues, fans and the Nigerian entertainment industry mourning the loss of one of its familiar faces. His family announced his death in the early hours of Friday, October 23, 2026, in a statement shared on his official Instagram page, confirming that the actor passed away following a brief illness.
The family expressed sadness over his death and appealed to the public for prayers, love and understanding as they mourned their loss. However, the statement did not disclose the specific illness that led to his death. Although the family confirmed that he had been ill for a short period, the exact medical cause of his death remains undisclosed.
Duru’s death comes months after he was at the centre of public concern over his health following the circulation of a video on social media that prompted speculation about his condition. The actor had previously responded to the reports, dismissing claims that he was battling a life-threatening illness and describing the footage as fabricated and malicious. His response had sought to reassure fans who were worried about his wellbeing.
Born on July 27, 1969, in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Duru later moved to Nigeria to pursue his education. He studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1996. His academic background complemented his passion for acting, which had already taken him into the Nigerian film industry several years earlier.
The actor began his professional film career in 1989 with Missing Mark, a production directed by the late filmmaker Ndubuisi Oko. However, he rose to wider prominence in 1995 after playing Ahanna in Rattlesnake, the acclaimed film produced by the late filmmaker Amaka Igwe. His performance in the production became one of the defining roles of his career and helped establish him as a recognised figure in Nollywood.
Over the years, Duru built a career spanning more than three decades, appearing in numerous Nigerian films and earning recognition for his performances. His work included productions such as Blood Money, Stigma and Mboputa. In 2020, he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role (Igbo) award at the Best of Nollywood Awards for his performance in Mboputa. He was also honoured with a United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007 in recognition of his influence on young people.
Beyond acting, Duru contributed to the affairs of the Nigerian film industry and served as interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010. His long-standing involvement in Nollywood made him part of a generation of performers who helped shape the industry through its development and expansion. His death has renewed attention to his body of work and the impact of actors whose performances have remained familiar to Nigerian movie audiences over the years.
Duru is survived by his wife, Adokiye, and their children. The family had previously suffered the painful loss of their son, Ifeanyi, in 2024. As tributes emerge following the actor’s death, his career, memorable performances and contributions to Nigerian cinema are being remembered by fans and colleagues. Funeral arrangements and further details surrounding his death had not been disclosed in the family’s initial announcement.
