Fasoranti: A Century of Service, From Awolowo’s Political School to Afenifere Leadership
Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, the elder statesman who became one of the most prominent voices in Yoruba political affairs, has died at the age of 100, bringing to a close a life spanning Nigeria’s colonial era, independence, military rule and democratic governance.
His death was announced on Tuesday by Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, who described the late Afenifere leader as a figure whose life was defined by wisdom, integrity and service to Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.
Born on May 11, 1926, Fasoranti built a public career that combined education, political administration and pro-democracy advocacy. His influence extended beyond party politics, particularly through his association with the progressive political tradition of the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and his eventual emergence as leader of Afenifere, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation.
Fasoranti’s political journey was shaped by his involvement in the Action Group during the First Republic and his subsequent association with the Unity Party of Nigeria during the Second Republic. Between 1979 and 1983, he served as Commissioner for Finance in the old Ondo State under the administration of Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin.
Beyond public office, he maintained a strong interest in education. A trained teacher and school administrator, he served in educational institutions before establishing schools, including Omolere Nursery and Primary School and Akure High School. His career reflected a combination of public administration, educational development and political engagement.
Fasoranti later became a leading figure in Afenifere, succeeding Pa Abraham Adesanya as the organisation’s leader. Under his leadership, the group continued to participate in national discussions on restructuring, federalism, governance and the place of the Yoruba people within Nigeria’s political system.
His political convictions also placed him among Nigerians associated with resistance to military rule and the campaign for democratic governance. During the regime of the late General Sani Abacha, Fasoranti was linked to pro-democracy activism, a period that helped cement his standing among advocates of constitutional rule.
His personal life was marked by tragedy in July 2019, when his daughter, Funke Olakunrin, was killed in an attack along the Ondo-Ore Expressway. The incident generated nationwide reactions and renewed debate over insecurity on Nigeria’s highways.
In May 2026, Fasoranti marked his 100th birthday, drawing tributes from political leaders and other prominent Nigerians who reflected on his contributions to public service, education and Yoruba political affairs. His death, announced months after the centenary celebration, has prompted renewed tributes to his long years of public engagement.
Governor Aiyedatiwa, in announcing the death, said Fasoranti’s counsel, fatherly guidance and principled positions on justice and good governance would be missed. He extended condolences to the deceased’s family, the people of Akure Kingdom and the wider Ondo State community.
Fasoranti’s legacy is rooted in the different roles he occupied throughout his life: teacher, school administrator, commissioner, political activist and leader of a prominent Yoruba socio-political organisation. His career connected several generations of Nigerian politics, from the era of Awolowo to contemporary debates about democracy, national unity and the structure of the federation.
His passing at 100 marks the end of a long public journey, while the causes he championed and the institutions he served remain part of the political and social history of Ondo State, Yorubaland and Nigeria.
