British High Commissioner-Designate Arrives Nigeria

The United Kingdom’s High Commissioner-designate to Nigeria, Pete Vowles, has arrived in Abuja to begin his new diplomatic assignment, taking over at a time when relations between both countries remain important across trade, security, development and people-to-people ties.

Vowles succeeds Richard Montgomery, who previously served as the UK’s High Commissioner to Nigeria. His arrival marks the beginning of a new chapter in his diplomatic posting after he was announced for the position on June 16, 2026.

Speaking after arriving in Nigeria, Vowles said he was excited to begin his assignment and identified listening, learning and travelling across the country as his immediate priorities.

He said he wanted to meet Nigerians and understand the country more closely, including its culture, people and energy, as he begins working with partners across different parts of the country.

Vowles also described the relationship between Nigeria and the UK as a deep and enduring partnership built largely around connections between the people of both countries. He said he was looking forward to strengthening those ties and exploring areas where both countries could achieve more together.

His appointment comes as Nigeria and Britain continue to maintain extensive links in areas including education, investment, trade, security, migration and development. The large Nigerian community in the UK and the significant number of British citizens and businesses connected to Nigeria also give the relationship a strong people-to-people dimension.

The new envoy brings considerable diplomatic and development experience to the position. His arrival is expected to provide an opportunity for the UK mission to continue its engagement with the Nigerian Government, private sector, civil society and other stakeholders.

Vowles is expected to spend his early period in the country meeting key officials and other stakeholders while familiarising himself with Nigeria’s political, economic and social environment.

His arrival also comes as both countries face shared interests in tackling insecurity, expanding economic opportunities and supporting stronger bilateral cooperation.

For Vowles, however, the immediate task is to understand Nigeria from the ground before setting priorities for his tenure. As he begins the assignment, he has already indicated that listening, learning and building relationships will be central to his approach.
