BREAKING: Court Of Appeal Sets Up Special Panel To Hear Cases Pending For Up To 40 Years
The Court of Appeal in Lagos has constituted a special panel to hear long-pending cases in its archives, including matters that have reportedly remained unresolved for as long as 40 years, in a move aimed at reducing the backlog of appeals awaiting hearing.
The special panel commenced proceedings on Monday, October 19, with Hon. Justice Biobele Abraham Georgewill presiding over cases listed for hearing.
The initiative is designed to unclog the court’s docket by giving special attention to old cases that have remained in the judicial system for decades. By dedicating a panel to these matters, the Court of Appeal in Lagos is seeking to address the accumulation of unresolved appeals and ensure that cases that have waited for years receive the judicial attention they require.
The commencement of proceedings marks an important step towards reviewing and hearing cases that have remained in the court’s archives for an extended period. Some of the matters reportedly date back several decades, making their resolution a significant concern for the parties involved and the administration of justice.

For litigants whose appeals have remained pending for years, the special panel offers an opportunity for their cases to be brought forward for hearing. Prolonged delays in the determination of appeals can create uncertainty for individuals, families, businesses and institutions awaiting final decisions on disputes that may have significant legal and financial implications.
The accumulation of old cases also presents a challenge for the judicial system, as pending appeals must be managed alongside newly filed matters. A dedicated panel for older cases provides a focused approach to addressing this backlog, allowing the court to concentrate judicial time and resources on matters that have remained unresolved for unusually long periods.
The move is particularly significant because the Court of Appeal plays a central role in reviewing decisions from lower courts and specialised tribunals. Delays at the appellate level can prolong disputes even after proceedings at the lower courts have been concluded, leaving parties waiting for the next stage of the judicial process.
The special sitting is therefore expected to contribute to efforts to improve case management and promote the timely determination of appeals. However, the eventual impact will depend on the number of cases the panel is able to hear and determine, as well as the complexity and procedural requirements of the individual matters before it.
With proceedings now underway, attention will be on how the panel handles the long-standing appeals and the extent to which the initiative helps reduce the number of cases awaiting hearing at the Court of Appeal in Lagos.
The panel began its work on Monday under the leadership of Justice Biobele Abraham Georgewill, marking the start of a focused effort to bring long-delayed cases back before the court.
