Ebola Alert: Lab Scientists Seek Virtual Campaigns for 2027 Polls
The Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria (AMLSN), Kaduna State Branch, has urged political parties to adopt virtual campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections as part of measures to reduce physical contact amid the Ebola outbreak.
The branch chairman, Mr. Turman Benjamin, made the recommendation in Kaduna on Thursday, October 22, 2026, proposing the use of social media, text messages, telephone calls and online meeting platforms such as Zoom and Google Meet as alternatives to crowded political rallies.
Benjamin said reducing unnecessary physical contact could help limit potential exposure while health authorities work to contain the outbreak. His advice comes as political activities gather momentum ahead of the next general elections.
He also called on the Kaduna State Government to intensify public awareness campaigns, strengthen contact tracing where necessary and provide adequate protective equipment for healthcare workers.
The medical laboratory scientist advised residents to avoid unnecessary physical contact, including handshakes and hugs, and to maintain appropriate hygiene practices. He stressed that Ebola can spread through direct contact with the blood and other bodily fluids of an infected person.
Benjamin warned against the unsafe handling of bodies of suspected or confirmed Ebola victims, urging that such responsibilities be left to trained personnel equipped with appropriate protective gear.
He further called on the government to ensure that hospitals have sufficient personal protective equipment, including gloves, to safeguard medical workers and reduce the risk of infection.
On diagnosis, Benjamin explained that laboratory testing was essential because the early symptoms of Ebola could resemble those of other illnesses, including malaria and typhoid fever. He urged anyone who develops concerning symptoms to seek prompt medical attention and encouraged the media to intensify public education on transmission and prevention.
Nigeria has confirmed an Ebola case in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, involving a woman who arrived on an international flight from Uganda. Health authorities have identified 44 close contacts for monitoring and begun tracing efforts to reduce the risk of further transmission.
The laboratory scientists’ appeal places public health precautions at the centre of preparations for the 2027 elections, highlighting virtual communication as a possible way for political parties to reach voters while limiting large gatherings during the outbreak response.
