INEC Begins 2027 Election Preparations to Prevent Voting Delays
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has begun early preparations for the 2027 general elections by setting up a multi-agency committee to ensure election materials reach polling units on time and prevent voters from being disenfranchised by logistical failures.
INEC inaugurated the Electoral Logistics Committee in Abuja on Thursday, October 15, as part of efforts to address transportation challenges and improve the delivery of election materials across the country.
INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, said the commission was starting early because the movement of election materials across Nigeria’s different terrains required careful planning, coordination and security arrangements.
He warned that no Nigerian should lose the opportunity to vote because election materials arrived late at a polling unit. He said the credibility of an election depended partly on whether polling units were open and properly equipped when voters arrived.
The committee, chaired by National Commissioner Rear Admiral Jamila Malafa (retd.), includes representatives of security agencies, transport unions and relevant government institutions.
Its responsibilities include assessing the commission’s transport needs, preparing plans for storing and distributing election materials, checking the readiness of warehouses and vehicles, and reviewing the condition of airports and seaports that may be used during the elections.
The committee is also expected to identify weaknesses in the logistics system and recommend solutions to possible delays, shortages, transport bottlenecks and security threats. It will coordinate the movement of sensitive and non-sensitive materials by road, air and water, while monitoring compliance with approved schedules.
Malafa said the committee would review previous elections to identify problems and develop measures to improve operations in 2027. Particular attention will be given to difficult terrain, areas facing security challenges and locations prone to crises.
She added that specialised teams could be created to oversee air transport, road movement, maritime operations, storage and security.
The early planning comes as INEC works to prevent delays that could disrupt voting, particularly in remote communities where transportation and security challenges may make the delivery of materials more difficult.
Beyond logistics, the commission is also stepping up efforts to encourage voter participation and address practices that threaten peaceful elections.
At the launch of the National Orientation Agency’s nationwide grassroots mobilisation campaign, Amupitan urged officials to take voter education to traditional palaces, markets, places of worship, campuses and village squares across all 774 local government areas.
He identified voter apathy, vote buying and electoral violence as major threats to the credibility of the 2027 elections. He encouraged eligible voters to check their registration status, collect their Permanent Voter Cards and participate peacefully.
The INEC chairman also warned political actors against violence and hate speech, while raising concerns about the use of artificial intelligence-generated deepfakes to spread messages capable of provoking ethnic or religious tension.
He said INEC was working with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission and other security agencies to monitor vote buying and respond to electoral offences.
National Orientation Agency Director-General Lanre Issa-Onilu said the voter education campaign would use community meetings, local-language messages, radio discussions, drama and digital platforms to reach Nigerians.
The campaign is intended to encourage citizens to participate in elections, reject vote buying and avoid violence.
With the 2027 elections approaching, INEC’s preparations will be tested by its ability to deliver materials on schedule, secure transportation routes and ensure that voters can exercise their rights without unnecessary obstacles.
