MTN Outage Hits Five States, Leaves Customers Waiting for Service Restoration
MTN Nigeria has confirmed a network disruption affecting customers in parts of five states, including Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory, as the telecommunications company works to restore its services.
The affected areas are parts of Oyo, Lagos, Rivers, Delta states and the FCT. Customers in the affected locations may experience difficulties accessing some MTN services while the disruption continues.
The company announced the development on Thursday, October 8, 2026, after customers began experiencing problems with its network. MTN said its technical teams were already working to restore services as quickly as possible and apologised to customers affected by the disruption.
The outage has the potential to affect more than ordinary phone calls, as mobile networks are now central to communication, banking, business transactions, social media, online work and access to other digital services.
However, MTN has not disclosed what caused the latest network problem. The company has also not provided a specific time for when full services will return, leaving affected customers waiting for further updates from the telecommunications operator.
MTN said the problem was limited to some parts of the affected states rather than indicating that its entire network across the five locations was down. This means the level of disruption may differ from one area to another.
The development comes shortly after MTN began compensating eligible customers for earlier network service disruptions recorded between February and April 2026. The compensation exercise followed directives from the Nigerian Communications Commission and the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission.
The compensation being paid to eligible subscribers is separate from Thursday’s outage. MTN has explained that the earlier credits were linked to qualifying quality-of-service failures and were calculated based on affected locations and individual customers’ spending patterns.
The Nigerian Communications Commission continues to monitor major incidents affecting telecommunications services across the country. Its incident reporting system records outages involving issues such as power failures and fibre cuts, showing how infrastructure problems can affect mobile communication services.
For customers currently experiencing problems, the immediate concern remains when normal service will return. MTN has asked affected subscribers for patience while its engineers work on the network.
The company has not linked the current disruption to the earlier compensation exercise, nor has it announced any new compensation for customers affected by Thursday’s outage.
MTN’s latest announcement therefore leaves customers in Lagos, Oyo, Rivers, Delta and the FCT waiting for two things: restoration of normal services and an explanation of what caused the disruption.
Until further information is released, customers in the affected areas have been advised to wait for updates as MTN’s engineers continue efforts to restore the network.
