NDLEA Busts Nigerian-Mexican Meth Lab in Enugu

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has dismantled a clandestine methamphetamine laboratory allegedly operated by a Nigerian-Mexican drug network in Enugu State, leading to the arrest of two suspected kingpins.

The laboratory was uncovered in Eziama community, Obeagu, Awgu Local Government Area, following months of intelligence gathering and surveillance by the NDLEA’s Special Operations Unit.

The suspects are 45-year-old Chukwu Obumneme Christopher, also known as Brown, and 60-year-old Chukwu Georginus Monday, alias George. The agency alleged that the two operated the facility in partnership with Rodriguez Villanueva, whom it identified as a member of a Mexican drug cartel based in Mexico City.

Christopher and Monday were subsequently arraigned before Justice Mabel Taiye Segun-Bello of the Federal High Court, Enugu Judicial Division, on a five-count charge.

The charges relate to alleged conspiracy, organisation, management and financing of a drug trafficking organisation, as well as unlawful possession of precursor chemicals allegedly used in the production of methamphetamine.

The two defendants pleaded to the charges, after which the court fixed October 21, 2026, for trial following an application by the NDLEA for an accelerated hearing.

Three other individuals named in the charge are still at large. They are Uchenna, also known as Uche; Celestine Ikemefuna Iwuchukwu; and Villanueva.

The NDLEA said its surveillance operation between December 1 and 4, 2025, tracked Christopher’s movements across Lagos, Enugu and Anambra states before operatives traced him to the compound in Obeagu.

A search of the property uncovered what the agency described as a sophisticated laboratory equipped with improvised reactors and distillation equipment capable of producing methamphetamine in commercial quantities. The facility was said to resemble other clandestine laboratories previously dismantled in Ogun, Oyo and Ebonyi states.

Among the substances recovered were 690 litres of methylamine, 1,000 litres of isopropyl alcohol, 300 litres of hydrochloric acid, 290 litres each of toluene and acetone, and 400 litres of liquid sodium hydroxide.

Operatives also recovered 125 kilogrammes of N-phenylacetamide, 414 kilogrammes of lead acetate and 769.6 kilogrammes of tartaric acid, among other controlled substances. The NDLEA said the combination and quantity of the chemicals were consistent with a high-volume P2P-based methamphetamine production operation.

A related search of Monday’s family residence also resulted in the recovery of eight large fuel tanks, four commercial gas burners, four dehydrators and 11 kilogrammes of ephedrine.

NDLEA Chairman and Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), said the operation demonstrated the agency’s determination to prevent transnational drug networks from establishing production bases in Nigeria.

Marwa commended the officers involved in the investigation and operation and said efforts would continue to locate the suspects still at large and bring them before the law.

The case is expected to return to the Federal High Court in Enugu on October 21, when proceedings against the two defendants are scheduled to begin. The allegations against them remain subject to determination by the court.
