Messi Retires From Argentina After 21 Years, Says He Has Nothing More To Give
Lionel Messi has announced his retirement from the Argentina national team, bringing an end to a remarkable international career that lasted more than two decades.
The 39-year-old Argentina captain announced the decision on Monday, August 31, 2026, in an emotional message published on Instagram, saying he had spent considerable time thinking about his future after the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
Messi revealed that the decision had already been made shortly after Argentina’s World Cup final defeat to Spain. He wrote the retirement message on July 21, 2026, two days after the final, but delayed making it public while his father, Jorge Messi, was receiving medical attention.
Argentina had reached the World Cup final in the United States, where they suffered a 1-0 defeat to Spain on July 19, 2026, ending their hopes of successfully defending the title they won in Qatar four years earlier.
The death of Messi’s father on August 8, 2026, at the age of 68, also weighed heavily on the football star as he considered whether to continue representing Argentina. Messi indicated that the loss strengthened his belief that it was time to close the international chapter of his career.
In his farewell message, Messi reflected on the commitment he had shown to the national team throughout his career, saying he had given everything he could for Argentina and had nothing more to offer.

He also pointed to the emergence of younger players who deserve opportunities with the national team, suggesting that the time had come for a new generation to take greater responsibility for Argentina’s future.
Messi’s international career began in 2005, and over the years he became Argentina’s most important player, eventually leading the country to the 2021 Copa América title and the 2022 FIFA World Cup trophy in Qatar.
His final international figures stand at 207 appearances and 125 goals for Argentina, making him the country’s record appearance holder and leading goalscorer.
His decision closes one of the most decorated chapters in Argentina’s football history. After years of disappointment in major international competitions, Messi finally delivered the Copa América and World Cup titles that had long eluded him before adding another major achievement with the national team.
Although he will no longer represent Argentina on the pitch, Messi said his connection with the national team will remain, with the football icon expected to support the country as a fan.
The retirement also marks the end of an era for Argentina, with the national team now facing the task of building its next generation without the player who has carried the captain’s armband through some of the most significant moments in its modern history.
