Saint Janet’s Final Journey: Family, Colleagues Gather in Ogun to Honour Music Icon

The remains of veteran Juju and Highlife musician Iyun Janet Ajilore, popularly known as Saint Janet, have been laid to rest in Abeokuta, Ogun State, weeks after her sudden death.

Family members, friends, colleagues and admirers gathered in Ogun State to pay their final respects to the singer, who was widely known for her distinctive music and the nickname “Mama Yabis.”

Saint Janet died on August 2, 2026, after she reportedly developed health complications. Her death came unexpectedly, as she had remained active in her daily life and musical activities shortly before her passing.

Her children had earlier disclosed that their mother complained of chest pain and difficulty breathing before she was taken to hospital. According to the family, she was receiving attention at the hospital when her condition suddenly worsened and she passed away.

The family also revealed that Saint Janet had been active just hours before her death. She had reportedly performed at a show, visited the market and prepared food before the health emergency that eventually led to her death.

Her sudden passing shocked members of the Nigerian entertainment industry, particularly those who knew her as a veteran performer who remained connected to the music scene for many years.

Saint Janet was recognised for her contribution to Juju and Highlife music, with her career earning her a loyal following among lovers of traditional Nigerian music.

Her burial in Ogun State has now brought family and associates together to close a painful chapter following the singer’s unexpected death.

The funeral also provided an opportunity for colleagues and loved ones to celebrate her life rather than remember only the circumstances surrounding her passing.

Saint Janet’s death was part of a difficult period for Nigeria’s entertainment industry, which mourned several prominent figures within a short period, including actress Temitope Osoba and filmmaker Dimbo Atiya.
